Manorama *1/2

Cast : Charmi,Nishaal & others
Director : Eswara Reddy
Music Director : Koti
Producer : P. Goenka.
Banner : Zee Motion Pictures

What it’s all about?

The film is set against the backdrop of violence – Godhra killings and the bomb blast at Gokul chat and Lumbini Park. The director wanted to show that life is much more than hatred and revenge. The theme of communal clashes is the basis for the film but the director loses his way and the film drifts to the romance between to pairs of lovers.

The plot:

Geetanjalai@Gilli (Charmy) is a practical girl. She believes in living a meaningful life and also living by the day without thinking about tomorrow. She stays in her friend’s house on Koti.

Right across her house is hotel Manorama. The hotel is the target of a terrorist plot. A killer, Nishaan comes to Hyderabad to place a bomb in the hotel and kill people. Gilli has the art of lip reading and this leads her to try and help two lovers, Vasu and Lakshmi.

For this, she takes the help of killer Nishaan. Gill learns that Nishaan is an orphan and that his family was killed in the Godhra incident. Nishaan comes close to Gilli.

Gilli and Nishaan fall in love in a period of a few hours. What happens next? Will Nishaan manage to set off the bomb in hotel Manorama. Does Gilli manage to help the young lovers? Will Nishaan and Gilli come together? Answers to these questions can be found on the silver screen.

The actors:

The film revolves for a major part around Charmy and she does a good job. Charmy has acted in the film without make up but still she is as charming as ever. She also dances in a towel for a song.

Nishaan is a newcomer. He is tall and reasonably built. He does an okay job but needs to improve a lot. Ali, MS Narayana, Dhanush, Lahari and others are adequate in their roles.

Koti’s music is okay. He also renders his voice for a song in the film. Some of the dialogues are good and make you think.

Ali and MS Narayana manage to raise a few laughs with their antics.

The bottom line:

Manorama is another bold attempt by director Eshwar Reddy. He had earlier come up with a meaningful ‘Mee Sreyobhilashi’. He tries to do a similar job with Manorama. He begins well but falters in the second half and this affects the pace and the overall impact of the film.

The film lacks both mass and class elements and its fate at the box office is not that bright.

Punnaminagu Movie Review *1/2

Seasoned director A Kodandarami Reddy who’s made films like Abhilasha and Challenge returns with a hugely disappointing, insipid film. With a wafer-thin plot on hand, he had to rely on skin-show and slapstick comedy to keep the audience engaged. However, all his efforts might go in vain as the film meanders from bad to worse no thanks to a dreary screenplay and awful performances. The tale of an avenging snake woman has been commercially viable before, but the director seems determined to change the trend! In spite of playing an authorbacked role, Mumaith Khan delivers a lacklustre performance and her skin show borders on obscenity. The comedy track of Rajiv Kanakala-Suhasini & Co is bland as it fails to evoke laughs. Writer-director duo-Yendamuri Veerendranath and Kodandarami Reddy should have chosen a better script for their comeback.
The film begins with a snake woman (Mumaith) and her husband descending on earth for a noble mission. A couple of snake-skin smugglers shoot the male snake, while the female snake escapes. A ruthless witch (Nalini) wants the missing serpent to be found, because she wants to attain the snake’s super-natural powers. Meanwhile, Mumaith joins her father and a cop (Nizhalgal Ravi) in exposing a drug mafia. But her father is shot dead. Mumaith decides to avenge his death. And if you want to find out what happens next, watch this film, at your own risk.
Mumaith should hone her acting skills or else she’ll be confined to doing item numbers. Rajiv Kanakala has to shed lots of weight. Vinod Kumar has nothing much to do, while Nalini overdoes her witch act.

Pal Pal Dil Ke Saath Movie Review *1/2

Some more canned stuff, anyone? Although, this film does boast of an interesting cast. There's Ajay Jadeja singing songs with Dev D's Paro, Mahie Gill. And we thought, Dev D was Mahie's first Hindi film.

Actually, it's understandable why Mahie would like to brush this outing under the carpet. As Dolly, the pretty little girlfriend of rich boy, Ajay Jadeja, she doesn't have much to do other than look pretty. Sometimes, when she's not coming out of the shower or whispering sweet nothings in Jadeja's ears, she's playing dutiful nurse to his irascible grandmother (Sushma Seth) who has so many people eyeing her wealth, she's even lost count of them, like us. Dolly dearest has another important role too. She must bridge the yawning gap between grandmother and grandson, ever since they separated after a tiff. In between the romance that keeps running off the track, there's supposedly a comic strain too with butler cum con man, Satish Shah trying to ward off the come-hither overtures of Slyvie. Not funny at all. Then again, what's good old Kambli doing here as the narrator of the film. Surely, the colourful cricketer deserved a better deal.

Chowrasta Crossroads of Love Movie Review ***

Paris, New York, Seattle, Mumbai, Delhi are some major cities which have ceased to be mere concrete jungles and acquired the form of breathing, living characters in landmark cinema. This time, it is the picturesque hill town of Darjeeling that mutates into an enlivened entity which just doesn't serve as a playground for a host of characters to find their bearings in life. Instead, it's sleepy charm, its laid back lustre, its winding alleys, its mossy greens and its breathtaking skyline play an active role as a wayfinder to the sundry characters, currently poised on the crossroads of their lives.

Director Anjan Dutt uses the sylvan town to explore the lives of an odd assortment of people who make up its social fabric. There's Victor Banerjee, the tea planter who writes love letters to his deceased wife and waits for a balmy day to jump off the cliff. He calls it flying! There's the stern school teacher who can barely handle the return of his divorced wife (Rupa Ganguly), and her new lover, into his life again. There are the pair of honeymooners (Naved Aslam and Aparajita) who are already afflicted by the first wave of marital blues, specially since their's is a runaway marriage between an earthy Punjabi and a Tagore-loving Bengali. And then, there is the terrorist (Atul Kulkarni), dreaming of Gorkhaland, even as the law is after him and his paymasters are duping him.

The sundry lives criss-cross each other on and around the shadowy chowrasta -- the central point of Darjeeling -- with each character trying to find a new equilibrium in his/her unsettled life. All this, while the sun rises and sets on just another ordinary day in the colonial hill resort that's somehow been left behind in the -- or is it left alone -- in the raucous march of time.

The film may be low on high drama but the director manages to create a mesmerising mood and draws you into the play of emotions that unfolds with a lazy charm. Almost in keeping with the pulse of Darjeeling, captured beautifully on screen by cinematographer Indraneel Mukherjee. While almost everyone pitches in a smart cameo, it is Victor Banerjee's lonely, aging escapist act that remains with you, with the resonance of the songs and the poetry that he so generously spouts through his philosophical ramblings, with garlic bread and whisky.

Dashavatar Movie Review ***

Kamal Haasan re-releases his Tamil film, this time in Hindi. Ironically, some times experiments aren't always successful. Like Dashavtaram, Kamal Haasan's ambitious venture which sees him playing ten roles which include a take on George Bush too. Daring, we'd like to insist; only, the make-up often borders more on the comic. In fact, most of his foreign avtars are funny which include a Chinese martial arts expert and a renegade FBI killer who teams up with pole dancer Mallika Sherawat in a cross-continental chase. And yes, we are supposed to believe Sherawat, pout et al, is a CIA trained operative from Pakistan. The only avtars that actually work are the tough temple priest who is bundled off into the deep blue sea with a deity, an Indian investigator, designed for comic relief and an Indian scientist from the US who must save a deadly vial, manufactured in a US lab, before it destroys mankind. All this, even as Dubya wants to talk to Manmohan Singh!

It's an international plot about apocalypse, spanning the cycle of Karma and Continents. Yet, despite the feel of kitsch, the film does manage to work as a racy thriller. Partly because the plot -- the threat of bio-terrorism -- has a topical feel in a post 9/11 world. Also, Kamal Haasan manages to keep the pulse running as he hip hops across spatial and temporal boundaries with indefatigable zeal. From a village in brahmanical India, scarred by a religious brawl to a lab in the US and then back again to the temple town, chasing a deity that contains the threatening vial, Haasan lends some degree of coherence to the chaos theory which forms the core of this film. Keeping him lively company is rural lass Asin, who seems to have perfected the art of ebullience, even before Ghajini.

Watch the film for its ostentatious canvas and for Kamal Haasan's daring, Although, his sundry avtars only remind you of his earlier disguises which clicked: Hindustani and Chachi 420.

Dev D Movie Review *****

THANK God for the mavericks, the non-conformists, the infidels, the les enfant terribles. They make things happen when kitsch becomes king; when creativity crumbles; when formula pervades, fungus-like. Imagine a world without rule breakers. And then imagine, like Anurag Kashyap: unbridled, unbounded, ungrounded....
Indeed, Dev D is one such flight of fancy from the filmmaker that definitely defies all conventions and demolishes all moulds. Not only does it rewrite the technique of the artistic medium, with its unusual cinematography, dizzy editing, non-linear plot narration, turn-of-the-century dialogues and breathtakingly bizarre audio track (music: Amit Trivedi, lyrics: Amitabh Bhattacharya), it completely revises the ancient text which has already made its mark in its various avtars , the latest being the high-pitched rendition of the self-destructive hero by Shah Rukh Khan in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas.

Kashyap has always been a contrarian filmmaker, consciously steering away from traditional Bollywood with films like Black Friday, Paanch, No Smoking. However, while his earlier films were an innovative search for his groove and rhythm, Dev D is like that heady cocktail which has the vodka pitched perfectly with the tang. (Incidentally, Dev D likes his vodka with thumbs up, washed down in unlimited portions, morning, noon and night!) Set against the rich rural backdrop of Punjab and Paharganj (Delhi), the film traces the self-destructive sojourn of a young, contemporary hero who mirrors the existential angst of the proverbial outsider, made legendary in the writings of Satre, Camus, Kafka, Kerouac and the ballads of Kurt Cobain.

But Dev D (Abhay Deol), unlike Devdas, isn't a blast from the past. In his rootlessness, his lack of purpose and his complete disconnect with the real (read traditional) world, he reflects the mindset of the archetypal new millennium 20-something who doesn't know how to blend tradition with modernity, permissiveness with orthodoxy, Oxford with Bhatinda. And so, he asks his childhood sweetheart, Paro (Mahi Gill) to send him her nude photographs through e-mail, yet can't handle the quandary about her virginity and pronounced sexuality. In a fit of aggrieved machismo, he spurns her wild sexual adventurism which sees her cycling to the neighbouring fields at the break of dawn with a mattress meticulously rolled up on the carrier for a clandestine tryst with him. (Ever seen the bharatiya naari do this in Indian cinema? Bravo, brave new Bollywood!) Little does he realise that Paro isn't mere putty in his hand and is unwilling to subject herself to any kind of ‘emotional atyachar', in the name of love.

Having given vent to her anger and pain, she simply moves on while the already disconnected Dev becomes even more dysfunctional with his alcohol and drug addiction. He moves to a seedy hotel in Paharganj and ends up after a drunken stupour in young Chanda's (Kalki Koechlin) pink and purple boudoir. Once again, Kashyap reinterprets the self-sacrificing courtesan, Chandramukhi in completely post-modern terms. Here, she is Lenny, the schoolgirl who ends up as the sex worker, Chanda, after being disowned by family and friends because she featured in a lewd MMS, that sent the whole nation in a lustful tizzy. `And they call me a slut!' exclaims the feisty escort who attends college by day and plays Florence Nightingale in shorts by night.
The relationship between Dev and Chanda begins with hate, scorn and derision with the decadent Dev unleashing his chauvinism and me-centrism on the hooker. But when the haze of cocaine lifts, the heartburn begins, once again. After having stooped to unimaginable lows, our hero dreams of a second chance. Will he get it or is Devdas destined to waste away forever? The last we saw him was at a non-descript momo joint in the seedy by-lanes of Paharganj, waiting for nirvana. Of course, he's all by himself, since proud little Paro's moved on and survivor Chanda's too strong to play doormat, willing to give up her slutty ways, for love alone.

Dev D is indeed a coming-of-age film, not merely for the protagonist, Devender Singh Dhillon, but it is a brilliant breakthrough for Bollywood too. It really doesn't matter whether the film ends up as a box office scorcher. What matters is the fact that for the discerning viewer, Dev D is a tryst with milestone cinema, reminiscent of Baz Luhrmann's Shakespeare-shaken-and-stirred in Romeo and Juliet. Kashyap, however, gets even more adventurous and adds a progressive flourish to both the plot and the characters which are played to perfection by the three lead players. If Mahi and Kalki are riveting new finds, assured of a long innings in cinema, then Abhay Deol adds a whole new meaning to the term `Unconventional Hero'. Manorama Six Feet Under, Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye were just teasers. Dev D is the class act from the Deol who cleverly flew over the cuckoo's nest. Don't miss this film which completely reinvents the musical love story, with zany numbers like ‘emosanal atyachar', ‘saali khushi', ‘nayan tarse' and the rest. More importantly, it might just go down in history as one of the most radical Indian films, at least in its delineation of male and female sexuality.
